Hadiqa Kiani Kamlee, Coke Studio Season 5 Episode 1 Posted: 12 May 2012 12:42 PM PDT Hadiqa Kiani Kamlee is a sufi kalaam written by the renowned 17th Century Punjabi poet, Bulleh Shah. The kalaam talks of the importance of knowing and understanding yourself, your conscience, strengths and weaknesses. As a Sufi poet and philosopher, Bulleh Shah emphasizes the importance of knowing yourself and your own heart as Sufi philosophy believes that God lives in the human heart and that understanding yourself is a way of bringing a person closer to God. The song explores the idea of humanity getting seeped in a world of materialism and artificiality, with little understanding of the real truth. Kiyani chose this song as she wanted to challenge herself with a different and more serious style of music that she had never done before. The music was composed and arranged by SYMT guitarist Hasan Omer who worked out the structure and gave it to lead singer Haroon Shahid to compose the melody and lyrics. Shahid says Tum Kaho represents the initial feelings of attraction and interest for someone. Bohemia Paisay Da Nasha, Coke Studio Season 5 Episode 1 Posted: 12 May 2012 12:16 PM PDT The song “Paisay Da Nasha” was written and arranged by Bohemia and had not been released before it was recorded at Coke Studio. Bohemia writes about the way people think in this world: people are intoxicated by the idea of money and in love with the idea of intoxication. He asks the important question 'what have you learnt in this life so far?' He writes that people are caught up in a rat race for money and fame and don't stop to notice people around them and when people die they can never be replaced. Bohemia was inspired to write this song because of the people he lost in his life. His mother died when he was just a teenager. A few years later he met and started spending all his time with a group of musicians and a tabla player in particular. He and his friend made plans to make original music together. His friend was murdered in 2002 – a year before Bohemia started rapping. In the chorus of the song, Bohemia makes a strong point that people don't recognize the value of others until they are dead and its too late. Atif Aslam and Qayaas, Charkha Nolakha, Coke Studio 5 Episode 1 Posted: 12 May 2012 12:12 PM PDT Charkha Nolakha is a qawwali popularized by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and performed by Qayaas in collaboration with Atif Aslam. Sarmad Ghafoor – a guitarist and producer for Qayaas and a sessions player for Atif Aslam – contacted Aslam and asked him if he was interested in doing a collaboration with the band. Initially the band fused a song from their album called Charkha – a separate song from Charkha Nolakha – with Charkha Nolakha and a third song called Kashmir. They sent this version of the song to Rohail Hyatt who said that the lyrical content of the two Charkha's made them incompatible. So the artists decided to re-work the song as a cover of Charkha Nolakha, giving the sufi poetry a taste of rock. 11th LUX Style Awards 2012 Nominations Posted: 12 May 2012 06:16 AM PDT Nominations for the 11th LUX Style Awards were announced in Karachi this week. The Awards office of Pakistan's most credible and coveted awards released nominations in 26 categories in the genres of Film, Music, Television and Fashion. The LSA Film Jury voted for 'Bol' across all three categories. Shoaib Mansoor's 'Bol' was the sole film that made the grade and qualified as a bonafide entrant for an award that is given out for excellence in cinema. With the Pakistan music scene limping back from the fallow years, the competition for nomination slots was once again hotly debated. As a concrete nod to experimentation and creating new boundaries for musical excellence a category was added to accommodate emerging talent in music. Public voting for TV and Music categories to decide the winner for the 11th LUX Style Awards will commence later this month. Fashion Jury members will be voting for the 10 Fashion Categories.
