The Sketches Collaborated with Jono Manson on an International ‘Project Khahori’

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 07:56 AM PST

By

The Sketches is a new Sufi band from Jamshoro, Sindh, which is based on two members, the lead vocalist Saif Samejo and guitarist Naeem Shah. Recently, they worked with Jono Manson, who is an American singer-songwriter, in their first ever international musical collaboration in 'Project Khahori'. The details of this joint venture are also on the official website of Jono Manson. It is a Sur of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai musically rendered in both English in Sindhi and it will be the first of its kind ever.

The Sketches band members have been a fan of Jono Manson since long and after entering into the Pakistani music industry, they immediately contacted him through an email to which they even got a personal reply from him. After an exchange of couple of emails, they decided they should do a joint venture. Having both been inspired from the great Sindhi Sufi poet, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai's poetry, they decided to cover it musically together and worked on 'Sur Khahori' which is about a wandering seeker.

A video has been planned to be shot of this Sufi song in Sindh soon with Jono Manson also being part of it. This will be the first ever Sufi/Sindhi collaboration with an international artist. Further details of this collaboration and an interview with the artists, both The Sketches and Jono Manson, could be read in the next issue of The Mag Weekly.

It is also interesting to note that Mr Manson’s music has been featured in numerous Hollywood film soundtracks, including:

  • The Postman (1997 Warner Bros.)
  • Kingpin (1996 New Line Cinema)
  • Eight Days a Week (1999 Warner Bros.)
  • On the Borderline (2000 Lions Gate)
  • Winding Roads (2000 Goldenlight)
  • Freedom (2009 Independent)
  • I Heart Shakey (2012 Amarok)

During his promotional tour for London, Paris, New York, Ali Zafar made a surprise visit to the Nizamuddin Dargah in Delhi according to a report in Times of India. He was simply dressed in jeans and a black jacket and met the dargah officials there. He later also offered prayers. To welcome him there, the Nizami brothers of Rockstar's 'Kun Faya' fame, especially performed for him, as they are the official qawwals of the dargah.

The In-charge of the Dargah Sharif, Syed Afsar Ali said:

"Ali bhai ne subah humein phone kiya aur bataya ki woh Dargah Sharif aana chahte hain."

About his visit to the dargha, Ali Zafar said:

"It was my first time at the Nizamuddin Dargah. I have heard a lot about it, but never got the opportunity to visit the place. It was lovely listening to the qawwali. I was in Delhi to promote my upcoming movie, isiliye baba ki duaein lene aaya tha unke dwaar par. Inshallah sabki kamnaye puri ho."

Abbottabad’s Setting will be Created in India for Kathryn Bigelow’s Movie on Osama Bin Laden

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 06:01 AM PST

Since shooting in Abbottabad is a little risky for an American film crew for security reasons and high-alert state in the area, hence the Pakistan Army garrison town will be recreated in Indian Punjab's Chandigarh and Patiala. Part of it will also be shot in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The film will be about the U.S. Navy Seals' team who hunted down Osama bin Laden and killed him during a night-raid. Others who were killed in the action were his aides and one of his sons.

Kathryn is the only-female Oscar-winning director and since the incidents took place on May 1st, she had been the first and only choice to direct a movie on this subject for her previous experience on The Hurt Locker, which was so liked despite some controversy of accuracy that it went on to win the Best Picture Oscar too.

As of now, the film project is untitled yet, but is expected to be released in the coming December. The cast so far includes Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Aymen Hamdouchi and Kyle Chandler. The part that will be recreated in India is the secret compound of the notorious Al-Qaeda leader where he hid for the past six years, which coincidently was next to Pakistan Army's establishment area. About the film, Jessica Chastain recently said:

"I've been working on Bigelow's movie in Jordan after the Oscars I go to India to shoot more."

The film has also caused a controversy in the U.S. because the details of the night-raid were leaked to the producers by the Obama administration and were never shared with either the national or the international media despite constant requests. About these allegations, the CIA spokeswoman said:

"The CIA has been open that as part of our public outreach, the agency has over the years engaged with writers, documentary film-makers, movie and TV producers, and others in the entertainment industry."

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Remembers Favour from the Bhatts, Sang ‘Chahat’ Free of Cost

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 05:55 AM PST

The usual charges for utilizing Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's musical talent are Rs.1 lakh, but for the Bhatt brothers, Mahesh and Mukesh, he charged not a penny keeping close to his heart their favour when he needed their support. Rahat also considers them to be effective in trying to build cultural relations between the two countries.

The song Chahat which he had sung for Blood Money was done free of any cost. The song was recorded in Dubai because Rahat could not get a visa for India according to sources at Sony music. They said:

"He had made it clear that he did not want any fee for the song strictly due to emotional reasons."

To confirm the news, Mumbai Mirror contacted Rahat in Pakistan and he declared the case to be so saying:

"Bhatt saab supported me and gave me an opportunity when nobody really knew me in the industry. Later, when I got embroiled in legal hassles, he was the only person to come forward and give me support. At the time, others were simply avoiding me since they did not want to get into trouble. Apart from that, Bhatt saab has also played a major role in trying to rebuild Indo-Pak relations. I hold him in very high regard."

But it is not only Rahat Fateh Ali Khan who can say good things about the Bhatts. Mahesh Bhatt stated the obvious for himself and said:

"During Paap, my daughter Pooja’s husband identified Rahat’s song Mann Ki Lagan. Pooja included it in her film though well-wishers advised her otherwise. Later, in Kalyug, Rahat sang Jiya Dhadak Dhadak. Both songs went on to become hits. And Rahat became popular. When he was caught in legal trouble, the people from the industry chose to stay away. I, however, believed that though he has broken the law, he couldn’t be termed as a terrorist. I defended him openly. It’s his way of saying ‘Shukriya’."

Amitabh Bachchan Thinks Ali Zafar’s ‘Yaar Daddi’ to be Soulful and Brilliant

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 05:46 AM PST

By

Recently, the news of Amitab Bachchan being in a hospital has led many of fans to be in a tensed state themselves. He is considered to be Bollywood's biggest star and almost worshipped by many people in India. But during his stay in the hospital he eased the pain of his illness through listening to soothing music from Coke Studio singers. He tweeted about it saying that he admires the voices of many both from India and Pakistan.

According to a report in Times of India, Amitabh was asked by his Twitter followers about what he thinks of Ali Zafar's song Yaar Daddi when he praised Pakistani version of Coke Studio. The evergreen star replied that he had heard the song and felt that it was soulful and brilliant.

When Ali Zafar was told that Amitabh Bachchan appreciates his music and talent, the Prince of Pop was humbled and considered the Big B's words better than getting any award, saying:

"I have never met Mr Bachchan but I wish to someday. I have immense respect for him. He has been my favourite actor since my childhood. I remember I always used to cry whenever he used to die in his films and my family would tease me about it. No award could ever measure to his comments about that song of mine."

Sur Kshetra halted, rights sold to Sony Network?

Posted: 24 Feb 2012 04:28 AM PST

Sur Kshetra Sur Ki BaziIt has been a while since we last heard about the “biggest singing reality TV show of Sub-continent”. Yeah, we are discussing today about Sur Kshetra, also known as Sur Ki Bazi.

The last we heard about it was the controversies attached to its auditions. But after an initial chaos the things finally moved forward. But now again according to some recent reports, the progress of the show is halted.

Though, all the selected participants of the show from India and Pakistan are already in dubai and getting training under their captains and teachers. But at the upper production level, things have been changing speedily. As of yet, we knew that Sahara One was the network that had the rights of Sur Kshetra in India. But now the news is coming that the show will be moving to another channel, most probably on Sony Network.

According to Hindustan times:

…the show is believed to have switched channels following a difference in opinion and interests between Sahara One officials and the producer, famous for a slew of musical reality shows.

Our sources insist that talks have been on for a while and have been moving smoothly for the producer and Star Plus, and the deal is likely to be signed within this week.

We haven’t yet got any clue that Sony Network has actually acquired the rights of the show. However, it is confirmed that GEO TV will broadcast the show in Pakistan (but not jointly now with Sahara One).

Runa Laila’s mother death:

We also heard from our close sources that rehearsals/recordings were stopped for a few days as mother of one of the judges had passed away recently. Runa Laila (from Bangladesh) who is also a judge in music reality TV show, had to leave for her country after the tragic news came her way.

Current status of Sur Kshetra:

Atif Aslam Sur Kshetra aka Sur Ki BaziThe latest update regarding Sur Kshetra has come from the side of Atif Aslam this time, who is the captain of Pakistan Team. This was the status posted on Atif Aslam’s official page yesterday:

“Atif Aslam is currently busy with the shooting of his first ever musical reality show “Sur Kshetra”. As soon as the show airs, we will provide all of you with exclusive pictures & videos from the show itself as well as backstage moments, preparations & rehearsals. The lack of activity on the page is a sign of things to come! ”

So this also confirms that singer was hecticly busy in show recordings and the show has actually been delayed longer than expected. It is also worth mentioning here that the superstar Atif Aslam has been completely disappeared from music scene since he went to Dubai for the recordings of the show. Apparently, he is bound to spend his time there for the recordings of the show.

There is a lot more we have to cover regarding Sur Kshetra but we keep that for another day. Stay tuned !
