Ali Zafar is Hopeful about Pakistani Cinema

Posted: 02 Feb 2012 10:41 AM PST

Ali Zafar about Pakistani CinemaThe cinema of Pakistan has never taken a high road and got started. Whatever charm that it had in the 1960s and 1970s, which is considered golden era for Pakistani films, has long gone and needs a revival of Cinema badly. A new approach to film making is all that is required because there is undoubtedly a great talent pool available in the country.

For this very reason of having talented artists, India is making the most out of them. Pakistani artists are getting offers to be involved in Bollywood either for singing or for acting and most of them have even been there and done that. Ali Zafar has been a huge success unlike anyone else. Ali Zafar thinks that the cinema of Pakistan can improve as the government has passed new regulations which ask every mall in the country to have a theatre. Ali said:

"Since Indian films have started coming to Pakistan, people are going to cinemas more often. Now more cinema halls are being constructed. The government has made the rule that every mall should have a theatre and screens and it is certainly getting better."

Getting new directors who are free to apply their creativity and aim for a difference can certainly make the change of scene Pakistani cinema is looking for. With films like Bol, Khuda Kay Liye, and Ramchand Pakistani have set a good trend of making issue-oriented films that not only provide us entertainment but also provoke us to think on these issues. May be making meaningful cinema in a country like Pakistan is the very break that Lollywood itself needs.

If there is such a hope as expressed by Ali Zafar in these words then things are certainly going to be better:

"People have rejected those bogus old ways of telling stories as they want something new. Pakistan is witnessing a new wave, thanks to social media."

Sadia Imam Joins the Line Amongst Others of Being a Hostess on TV

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 08:54 AM PST

Sadia imamSadia Imam is already acclaimed for her brilliant work on television over the years. Now she is also stepping into hosting a morning show on TV. There are so many morning shows on TV, each channel has one, and sometimes, a channel even has more than one morning show or something in that format.

When most actors are actually availing this opportunity of being seen every day early morning, then why should an actress like Sadia Imam greet the nation daily. This whole idea of renowned actors hosting a morning show catches half and at times more than half the audience for a programme, but the benefit also goes to a host, which is of not getting out of people's minds and sights. Sadia Imam has previously also worked as a model, now she is adding another category to her talent list.

Preparation for the show is already underway with Sadia recording promos and helping to design set to give it the look she wants. Most of the times, it is just about the look for the set and the host that makes a morning show and for the producers, the advertisements that come through it all. But one expects Sadia to actually have some great content with a different concept to present the morning show. The morning show will start from February 6.

Veena Malik Denies Assaulting Her Co-Star, the Director Supports Veena

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 10:59 AM PST

Veena with co star Vedita in Mumbai 125 KMsAs if Veena Malik's "beauty" is so intolerable for her co-stars and peers that she is being alleged of difficult behaviours. This time, the blame is of her assaulting 3D horror film Mumbai 125 km's co-star Vedita Pratap Singh. Landing into such controversies, the only option Veena is often left with is to straight out deny them. But this time, she does have a backing from the Telegu film's director, Hemant Medhukar. Vedita Pratap Singh claimed that Veena Malik hit her hard deliberately while shooting a fight sequence for the film. Vedita said:

"It was an action sequence. I was supposed to be beaten up. I don't know what happened to Veena. She actually hurt me and she did it so badly that I had nail marks on my body."

She further said to Mumbai Mirror:

"I don't know what was wrong with her. And then she pushed me so badly and banged my head on the rod. After the incident, I spoke to the director and told him that she is deliberately doing this. Acting is one thing, but this is just over acting."

In Veena's defence, Hemant said:

"I am not aware of any such incident on the set of my film. Since December 24, Veena has not shot a single scene for us. I don't know what Vedita is talking about."

Now when the director is on your side, then the final cut call is yours. Hence, in this case, Veena Malik seems to come out on top. Veena expressed her innocence saying:

"It is a concocted story. I have been in Dubai since the last 30 days. So, how can I manhandle or hurt her. The incident, which she claims to be real, is actually a reel shot and the injuries seen on her forehead were made up for the shot."

She released a press statement saying:

"Who is this girl and why should I be insecure of her. She [Vedita Pratap] just wants to garner cheap publicity at my cost."

Now this whole rumour is a publicity stunt for sure that will in the end, if nothing else, then benefit the film's promotion. People would want to go in their eagerness to see the scene which has become the center of attention in the media due to Singh's allegations.

Gig Review: Qayaas performance wins the hearts of rock music lovers in Karachi

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 08:38 AM PST

Qayaas Concert Review

Qayaas, the just awarded best rock band of South Asia at IndieGo Awards, stole the hearts of all head-bangers present at Karachi Arts Council on Sunday night.

It was a full power packed performance by the band, appreciated and supported by music maestros like Rohail Hayat-the name behind Coke Studio success, Louis J. Pinto aka Gumby, Atif Aslam’s guitarist Asad Ul Hafeez and Viccaji sisters. Fashion designer Muneeb Nawaz, with some of his well known male models, was also spotted at the event.

USS PAAR, the debut album launch show of the band was started at 10:10 pm, with Qayaas Band’s popular number Shehrezade. The stage and lights were truly creating an atmosphere for all headbangers to bang their heads on the beats of Qayaas songs. They had specially called their sound-man from Islamabad to see all the sound related things and he then proved his presence by his excellent sound work skills.

Before they started their second track of the night, Umair Jaswal, the lead vocalist of the band, asked all the headbangers to come near right in front of the stage. This created even greater atmosphere and Umair started screaming even louder. Umair’s vocals were hell loud and power packed.

The band started their third track Halaak at nearly 10:30 and it may not justify or may be sound lame but literally this was the time when I started feeling that, this is it, I haven’t seen any other local rock band performing live at this caliper and with this energy. It was not only me who was getting this feeling, I talked to many guys there and almost all had the same feeling like me. They were enjoying, headbanging and cheering Qayaas. It was hell loud, packed with energy and power, awesome guitar riffs and solos played by Khurram Waqar and Sarmad Gafoor, heavy drum beats by Salman Rafique aka Fifo, the very experienced base guitarist and only Karachiite Shaheryar Ghayas and with the heavy vocals of Umair Jaswal.

The whole crowd completely involved into their music when they started their fourth track of the night, Umeed. Umeed is one of their very popular track and almost all the crowd remember the complete lyrics of the song. The fifth track of the night was a cover song named Charkha, which is also included in their debut album Uss Paar. Just after this track, Umair, the lead vocalist introduced his band members. Sarmad Gafoor and Khurram Waqar (the founder of the band) on guitars, Salman Rafique aka Fifo on drums and Shaheryar on base guitar.

I also saw there Muneeb Nawaz involving into Qayaas music and singing loud back in crowd when they started their fifth track of the night Pal. It was such a catchy song which addicted myself too when I had first got a chance to listen it.

The sixth song of the night Terey Liye, was an acoustic version. Khurram Waqar played acoustic guitar on it. It gave enough time to Sarmar Gafoor to set his Piano for the seventh track of the night Pukaar, which they dedicated to the flood victims.

The band played another very popular track Tanha, which later on ends up with the drum solo of Fifo. Mera Wana, another very meaning full song which they have dedicated to the people of Wana, was the second last track of the night. It created a guitar battle between Khurram Waqar and Sarmad Gafoor, which both won indeed.

It was 11:40pm when the band dedicated the title track of their album Uss Paar to the music maestro Rohail Hayat, who was sitting back in crowd. This all was end up by 11:50pm when Umair Jaswal thanked the whole crowd and specially all the big names sitting back in crowd.

Talking to the team members of Pakium, the band founder, Khurram Waqar expressed his feelings that it felt very good that the whole crowd eventually remembers the lyrics of our all songs and we haven’t even thought that we will get this much big response from them.

Sarmad Gafoor, the guitar-man said that it was great experience performing for such a supportive crowd and music lovers. The drum-machine Salman Rafique aka Fifo was also very excited with the response they get from the crowd. Shaheryar Ghayas, the only Karachiite in the band was very happy and said that it is his first time when he played for this band Qayaas at this venue, he had played two times at the same venue before but with two other band.

Umair Jaswal the lead vocalist of Qayaas was also seen very excited and thankful to the crowd and organizers.

This concludes all what I have witnessed at the Karachi Arts Council of Pakistan. I must give 10/10 for their excellent live performing and managing the show in a much disciplined manner. I would love to see the bands like Qayaas performing in upcoming seasons of Coke Studio and getting shows abroad so they can put the rock music of Pakistan to its next level.

The after show video interview that we conducted will be up in a day or two. So stay tuned !
