Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy becomes the first Pakistani to get nominated for Oscar

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, a Karachi based journalist and documentarian has been nominated for Oscar Awards for her documentary short film named Saving Face. The short film is all set to be released in March this year, while the Oscars will be held on February 26.

Sharmeen is also the first Pakistani to win an Emmy award, which she won for her documentary, Pakistan: Children of the Taliban in 2010. She is also the first non-American to win the Livingston Award for Young Journalists for her documentary.

Saving face has been co-directed with Daniel Junge. The short film depicts the life of a British-Pakistani plastic surgeon who donates his time to heal acid victims in Pakistan.

Punjab Govt imposes ban on Concerts in educational institutes

Punjab Assembly has unanimously approved a resolution which seeks ban on “Objectionable” concerts in educational institutes of Punjab.

Exactly two weeks ago, in a tragic accident, 3 Girls died in Atif Aslam’s concert in Lahore due to mismanagement. As the news aired on news channel, many people showed concerns and opposed the growing culture of “concerts” in educational institutes. As a result of it, today a resoluton was passed by an MPA of opposition party Pakistan Muslim League-Q to ban such events in college and universities.

According to Express Tribune, The MPA of PML-Q – Seemal Kamran – while explaining the merits of bill said:

“Pakistan is an Islamic republic and permitting music concerts to take place in public and private educational institutions is against the morality and ethics of Islamic culture.”

Artists such as Ali Zafar and Ali Azmat came forward instantly and strongly protested against this resolution to ban events. Ali Zafar, after learning about this ban, tweeted on his account: “objectionable” concerts? Who will decide what is objectionable. For some jeans and long hair for men objectionable. For some no hair.

Ali Zafar further wrote on his twitter account that Banning something doesn’t solve a problem. Creates more. Numberless artists have done numberless concerts in numberless colleges in last many years. Safely and in the best of manner. One regretful-unfortunate mishap due to “mismanagement” cuts it all out. PAK is being mismanaged since decades. Should it be banned ?

On the other hand, the former lead vocalist of Junoon Band Ali Azmat called it a “regressive attitude” by Government. He feared that this is an attempt to talibanize Pakistan.

Atiqa Odho Will Appear in a Film Playing a Character Role

It has been long since Atiqa Ohdo had been seen in films, but finally she has decided to break the sequence of not appearing on the big screen. She has accepted an offer to work on Tanveer Fatima Rehman's new movie. She went through the script thoroughly and agreed to it when she became satisfied about her role in the whole story. She will play a character role.

Further information about the film as to who the other cast members are and what is the title of the film are not yet public. But the film will be completed soon and would most probably be released sometime next year.

This year Atiqa Odho is already in people's mind with her popular new drama Humsafar which has seen great success. She is indeed a good actress and being on the go, she is expected to live up to high hopes for her film performance too. So anticipate it.

Laila Admitted to a Hospital Due to Heavy Drinking

Just today it has been reported that the actress Laila was admitted in Lahore National Hospital due to her heavy drinking. She was taken to an extensive care unit of the hospital where she was reportedly seen smoking. Her medical check-up was carried out by a psychiatrist. She confessed to the doctor that she had a heavy drink and also took a Nalbin injection due to depression.

It looks like she is in a lot of trouble in her life. The doctor also warned her of getting hepatitis disease due to use of the injection. These are very things that one should always avoid in life, no matter however hard the circumstances are.

The lives of a lot of working actors in the Pakistani film industry is difficult and it is understandable to go through hardships, but the solution to these should never be smoking, drinking or taking such drugs in self-medication because not only do these lead to bad addictions, but also are life-threatening. It all ruins a career for whatever chance that it has.

The story of “Mata e Jaan Tu Hai” revolves around Haniya and Ibad. Haniya goes to live with her grandmother in the US after her parents' death and takes admission in an engineering college. Ibad comes to New York to study engineering and takes admission in the same college. He meets Haniya here and they fall in love. Despite his family's disapproval, Ibad marries Haniya. But an accident changes Haniya's life forever.
